COMPACT FLUORESCENT LIGHT BULBS (CFL)

If you’re a home or business owner, your electricity bill probably consumes a significant portion of your monthly utility budget. That’s because incandescent bulbs are cheap on the front end, but costly to power. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) last up to 10 times longer than incandescents—and require 75 percent less energy. In addition, compact fluorescents emit 90 percent less heat than their incandescent competitors.

What are CFLs?
CFLs are miniature versions of full-sized fluorescent tubes, designed to screw directly into existing light sockets. Available in warm and cool varieties, these eco-friendly bulbs help reduce CO2 and sulfur oxide emissions generated by electric power plants.

Converting your incandescents to CFLs? Compact fluorescents require a small amount of mercury to create light, so remember to treat them with care and follow the Energy Star guidelines for proper cleanup and disposal of broken, damaged or exhausted bulbs.

CFL Varieties
While early CFLs produced unnatural light with poor color rendering, today’s bulbs are available in a range of white-light shades. Try cooler colors for reading and desk lamps, and replace your kitchen, dining and living area bulbs with warmer selections. The latest CFL designs use phosphors to improve color accuracy, and come with electronic ballasts that reduce or prevent annoying flickers and humming noises.

Consider the following CFL lamp varieties available from Dallas Light Bulb:

  • Spiral: Producing light that’s similar to incandescents, these CFLs have a standard base, making them compatible with most household fixtures.
  • Globe: Ideal for bathroom lighting, ceiling fans and open fixtures where the bulb is not concealed, globe CFLs diffuse light with their attractive dome cover.
  • Standard: Created to look like a standard bulb rather than a spiral CFL, these lamps provide light quality similar to incandescents.
  • Floodlight: Use indoor/outdoor CFL floods when you’re ready to replace recessed lamps and porch lights.
  • Candelabra: For small fixture bulb replacement in ceiling fans and chandeliers, these elongated, torpedo-shaped CFLs are the perfect choice.

Contemporary CFLs are effective lighting solutions for nearly any application, including can lighting, reading lamps, desk lamps, porch lights and track systems. They’re not recommended, however, for lighting situations that require frequent on-off switching, since this process can drastically reduce bulb lifespan.

Choosing Your CFL
If you need assistance selecting the best CFL for your application, contact our knowledgeable account managers for information about compatible base styles, bulb colors and ballast requirements. Ask about dimmable compact fluorescents, which function well in rooms requiring a dimmer switch for ambiance or security purposes.
