Pulse Start Metal Halide – lamps that start using a high voltage igniter in the ballast instead of a starting electrode (probe) in the lamp.

Unlike traditional probe-start metal halides that don’t use an igniter and require 3 electrical contacts to ignite gas and remain lit, pulse-start metal halide lamps use an igniter from inside the ballast and two electrical contacts.

Pulse-start bulbs cost approximately 20% more than probe-start, however, the initial cost is offset by other cost savings, such as brighter light (more lumens per watt of electricity), lower labor costs and less frequent lamp replacement, as well as the electricity cost savings over the lifetime of the lamp. Higher maintained lumens means that potentially up to 1/3 fewer fixtures can be specified to achieve overall lighting goals, reducing both installation and operating costs. The extended life of pulse-start lamps can cut relamping schedules in half.

Pulse-start lamp benefits include:

  • longer lamp life
  • faster start-up
  • higher light output as lamp ages
  • higher light output per unit of electric power
  • stable color rendering as lamp ages
