Sockets & Lamp Holders

A light socket or lamp holder is simply an electrical connector used for installing electric lights. The four major types of lamp holders are:

• Edison Screw
• Bi-Pin Base (Plug-in Style)
• Bayonet Mount/Twist Lock
• Wedge Base

The Edison Screw connector is typical in flashlights to streetlights. The Bi-Pin type (plug-in style) has pins in one or both ends and is typically used in halogen lights and fluorescent tubes. A Bayonet Mount is an older technology used in automotive lighting, and the Wedge Base type of connector is used with Christmas lights and newer automotive lamps.
