What is a Germicidal Lamp or UV light bulb?

Germicidal or Ultraviolet Lamps come in several lengths and are mainly used to kill bacteria in the air. You will see germicidal / UV light bulbs in hospitals, restaurants and doctor and dentist offices and are also used in air ducts. These lamps are clear and emit little visual light. Germicidal and Ultraviolet lamps are typically mounted inside a fixture and pointed upward, or are used in air ducts. It's also important to note that in order for germicidal and ultraviolet lamps to work, they must not have any plastic or covers or diffusers. Covers or diffusers would negate the UV output rendering it ineffective. Germicidal and UV lamps also create ozone when they are energized, which helps our environment. They operate off the same ballasts as regular fluorescents of the same size. Though some fixtures can be used with these, they must be shielded out of direct sight or you will have exposure to UVC waves which can be dangerous. UV Germicidal lamps (ultraviolet lamps) are used for air and water purification equipment. Germicidal lamps come in a wide range of glass types, diameters, bases and shapes. They are available in both ozone and non ozone producing types.

How does a Germicidal or UV light bulb Work?

Ultraviolet germicidal energy is radiation produced by low-pressure mercury lamps. The light bulbs are made of special glass, which allows the passage of light rays emanating at 254 nanometers. This particular radiation has the ability to kill all microorganisms it comes in contact with.

How long do these Germicidal and Ultraviolet light bulbs and lamps last?

The life of a UV germicidal lamp is generally 9,000 hours. Lamp change outs should be done once a year as the effectiveness of the lamp is reduced over time.
