Daylight Saving Time

Did you know that Benjamin Franklin came up with the idea of Daylight Saving Time? It became law in 1918. DST has gone through many changes since it was first implemented, including in 2007 when DST was extended to begin at 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday of March and end on the first Sunday of November. Arizona, with the exception of the Navajo Nation, Hawaii, and the territories of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa are the only places in the U.S. that do not observe DST but instead stay on “standard time” all year long. The 2011 schedule for DST runs March 13 – November 6. Did you “spring forward” yesterday?

Did you know that man-made lights on beach properties have long been a problem for sea turtle hatchlings. Hatchling sea turtles emerging from nests at night are naturally drawn to the light of the moon and stars relative to the water. They can easily be distracted and drawn to artificial lights instead from resorts, hotels and other lit beach properties. Amber lights attract the sea turtles less than other lighting, allowing adult turtles to nest properly and hatchlings to head out to sea.

Lighting the Ball in Times Square

Did you know that the Ball in Times Square has 2,688 crystal triangles bolted to 672 LED modules attached to an aluminum frame? The geodesic sphere is 12 feet in diameter and weighs 11, 875 pounds.

The Ball is illuminated by 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs (light emitting diodes). Each LED module contains 48 Philips LEDs – 12 red, 12 blue, 12 green, and 12 white for a total of 8,064 of each color. The mixing of the four colors creates a spectacular kaleidoscope effect for all to see.

History of Christmas Lights

Did you know…the first electric lights used on a Christmas tree was in NYC in 1882 — 80 small, individual bulbs created by Edward Johnson, an inventor who worked under Thomas Edison? Johnson also created the first string of Christmas lights which went into mass production in 1890. They were used in 1900 by department stores for Christmas window displays.
